Part two of the unit on patterns, focusing on Number Patterns in PowerPoint format for projection on Interactive White Board (IWB). This lesson (11 slides) revises pattern knowledge and extends concepts and identifies the group work activities the students will undertake the remained of the week.This presentation is used daily for lessons six through to ten/end of unit.

Lesson 6: Number Patterns PowerPoint
Objectives
Patterns are an important focus of maths in the early years. The ability to understand patterns and the relationship between the parts of a pattern is an essential part of mathematical thinking and learning.
Students are being introduced to the two broad types of patterns, repeating and growing. In Year 2, students will also be introduced to number patterns. It is important that students are able to distinguish between repeating and growing patterns and understand the differences in the rules and relationships that belong to these patterns before they begin to study number patterns.
Developing fluency and flexibility in using patterns is essential. Because knowledge of patterns is fundamental to mathematics, it is important for the students to experience additional activities that teach the same concepts before moving on.
Overview of task
This week’s activities will be focused on number patterns
Students’ prior knowledge and experience.
It’s important for students to have multiple opportunities to analyse number patterns, work out the rule and then continue the pattern. They need to be able to distinguish between number patterns and notice differences in rules and relationships that belong to the various patterns.
Resources and preparation
PowerPoint on Patterns connected to IWB
IWB visible to all students
Internet access to white board for interactive games.

Load Number Pattern PowerPoint onto IWB
Review and discuss the types of patterns
Watch video story “Katy’s day at the beach on number patterns”
Use the white board to work out the pattern in the story.
Work out as a group the number patterns on next slide
Load the flash game on the next slide and play several rounds with the Robots Function box.
Discuss how this week we will be working on number patterns.
What are we going to learn in this unit? Discuss learning outcomes and assessment.
Introduce and explain demonstrate the three group activities.
• Stop that creature: using the IWB students will find the rules in number patterns to stop evil clones.
• Calculator patterns: in alternating pairs of scribes and operators, students will make number patterns with the constant function on a calculator and record and observe the patterns they make on a 100 grid.
• Mathletics & Rainforest maths: review class computer log in details and ensure all students have access to their Mathletics passwords.
Break class into three heterogeneous groups and allocate group rotations.
Assessment
Outline the assessment activities that will be used to measure the students learning outcomes.
Test will be conducted on Friday for first half of lesson followed by Fun Friday where students have free choice on playing with classroom educational games and activities.
