Lesson 9: Rainforest Maths and Mathletics
Objectives
Students use every day and mathematical language, mental computations, representations and technology to generate solutions and check for reasonableness of the solution
Overview of task
Students work through the activities on the Rainforest and Mathletics web site
Students’ prior knowledge and experience.
Developing fluency and flexibility in using patterns is essential. Because knowledge of patterns is fundamental to mathematics, it is important for the students to experience additional activities that teach the same concepts before moving on. This week’s activities will be consolidating students’ knowledge of patterns before introducing number patterns in lesson 5. Students regularly use web site Rainforest maths, which is a part of Mathletics.
Mathletics is a subscription based program, paid for by the P & C association which the students can access 24/7 during the year. Similar maths games are available online for free at http://www.mathplayground.com/index.html
Resources and preparation
4 x class computers with web access to Mathletics.
Learning experience
Load Number Pattern PowerPoint onto IWB and revise as necessary.
Review the three different group activities on IWB.
Make sure all students are aware off what group they are in
Arrange this group into pairs and discuss proper use of school owned technology equipment.
Teacher will move from group to group helping and observing progress.
Assessment
Observe and record the student’s ability to translate growing patterns into number patterns and identify the rule in number patterns.
Access the teachers’ progress section on the Mathletics site and note students’ progress.
Extension
